Who Qualifies as a Dependent Child?
A dependent child is eligible for sponsorship if they meet the following criteria:
- Age: They are under 22 years old and are not married or in a common-law relationship.
- Over 22 and Dependent: If they are over 22, they must have depended on you financially before turning 22 and be unable to support themselves due to a physical or mental condition.
Eligibility Requirements for Sponsors:
To sponsor your dependent child, you must:
- be 18 years of age or older.
- be a Canadian citizen or a Permanent Resident.
- be able to provide for your basic needs and those of your dependent children as well as your spouse.
- be able to prove your relationship to your child.
- not have a criminal record, not be in prison, charged with a serious offence, or bankrupt.
- not be in default of a previous sponsorship undertaking, not be under immigration investigation.
- not be receiving income assistance, except for reasons of disability.
